A rocket has just landed on the residential and operations headquarters of several US oil giants including ExxonMobil Corporation in Iraq.
The attack is coming a few days after several attacks were carried on US interests in Iraq.
According to a report by Reuters News, other American oil giants operating at the site include Royal Dutch Shell PLC and Italian Eni SpA.
Reuters cited police sources who said the rocket was a short-range Katyusha missile that landed 100 meters from the part of the site used as a residence and operations centre.
The tension between the U.S. and Iraq has heightened in recent times after President Trump pulled out of the JCPOA and imposing economic sanction on Iran over its nuclear program.
Last month, the US had evacuated all its personnel from its Baghdad embassy. The US had alerted American oil companies across Iraq that there were threats of attacks from Shi’ite groups linked to the Islamic Republic of Iran.
Exxon sources told Reuters that they are planning to evacuate about 20 foreign staff from the field.
The US had blamed Iran for renewed tensions in the region. Last week, the US blamed Iran for oil tankers’ attacks at the Gulf of Oman.
