Institute says rice, sorghum, cassava will witness poor harvest

The National Agricultural Extension and Research Liaison Services (NAERLS), Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, has said the country will witness shortfall in the harvest of rice, sorghum and cassava in the 2018 wet season.

The institute, in its Agricultural Performance Survey (APS) for the 2018 wet season in Nigeria, made available to stakeholders at the ongoing 11th National Agricultural Show at Kilometre 28 along the Abuja-Keffi Expressway, said the reason for the expected poor harvest is due to “recent incidences of flooding across the country.”
NAERLS, however, said there would be “bountiful harvest for most crops in 2018 with the exception of rice, sorghum and cassava.”
Meanwhile, an Assistant Director at the institute, Prof. Sani Yusuf Ahmad, who led the institute’s team to the agric show, said they were working hard to revamp the poor state of extension services in the country.

Prof. Ahmad said with the introduction of the e-extension scheme, millions of Nigerian farmers across the country would be reached in their local languages.
He reiterated that the essence of the innovation was to provide information to farmers in all areas of agriculture covering best agronomic practices, commodity prices, inputs supply; and weather information.
