Energy partner joins Pinsent Masons in South Africa

With over 20 years’ experience, Lloyd Chater has joined Pinsent Masons’ Johannesburg office as a partner, where he will work across the African continent with a focus on mergers and acquisitions (M&A) which are concerned with equity capital markets and infrastructure and energy assets.

Chater joins the firm from Bowmans where he worked for almost two decades during which he was responsible for leading its cross-practice group construction sector offering.

He also represented multinational and local companies on M&A, tendering, joint ventures, as well as facilities management service agreements and infrastructure and mining development projects.

Notably, Chater led a team that advised South African satellite television broadcaster On Digital Media on all aspects of its ‘StarSat’ broadcasting business.

At Pinsent Masons, Chater will focus on construction projects, acquisitions, as well as supply and service agreements.

Andrew Masraf, the head of transactional services, stated: “Lloyd advises some of the biggest players in the South African market and brings unrivalled experience of working on transactional mandates, in particular cross-border international M&A work.”

He added that “his appointment complements the firm’s continued commitment to grow our transactional practice in South Africa”.

May, meanwhile, saw Pinsent Masons hire Cliffe Dekker Hofmeyr’s head of construction in Johannesburg.

In March, FTI Consulting hired eight experts from local economics firm Econex, bolstering its expertise in competition analysis and damages assessments.

Hogan Lovells was dealt a blow in April when Eversheds Sutherland recruited its head of mining Warren Beech and his team in the firm’s first move into the South African mining market.

Other hires in Johannesburg include those at e-commerce company Nasperswhich hired Phuti Mahanyele-Dabengwa as its new chief executive  earlier this month and Herbert Smith Freehills appointed a new head of alternative legal services.
